1. Introduction

CombiCert is committed to ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all employees, subcontractors, customers, and members of the public who may be affected by our plumbing, heating, and gas services. We believe that high standards of health and safety are integral to the success and reputation of our business.

This policy outlines our approach to health and safety management, including our responsibilities, procedures, and controls in line with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, and other applicable legislation.

2. Statement of Intent

  • Provide safe systems of work and a safe working environment.
  • Prevent accidents, work-related injuries, and occupational illness.
  • Regularly assess risks associated with our activities and implement effective control measures.
  • Ensure all work with gas appliances is carried out by competent Gas Safe registered engineers.
  • Supply appropriate PPE, training, and supervision to staff.
  • Keep up-to-date with relevant legislation, industry best practices, and safety innovations.
  • Foster a positive safety culture across the organisation.

3. Responsibilities

Director / Company Owner

  • Overall responsibility for health and safety lies with the director of CombiCert.
  • Ensures adequate resources are allocated for training, equipment, and risk control.
  • Reviews and updates this policy annually or following significant changes.

Engineers / Field Staff

  • Follow all health and safety training, procedures, and method statements.
  • Wear issued PPE at all times as required (e.g., gloves, eye protection, respiratory equipment).
  • Report hazards, unsafe conditions, or accidents to the management immediately.
  • Maintain good housekeeping on site, keeping work areas tidy and equipment secure.

Subcontractors / Temporary Workers

  • Must comply with CombiCert’s health and safety procedures and possess suitable qualifications.
  • Must provide proof of Gas Safe registration (where relevant) and current public liability insurance.
  • Will not carry out any gas-related work unless directly authorised by CombiCert management.

4. Risk Assessment & Method Statements (RAMS)

Site-specific risk assessments are carried out before any major work, especially boiler installations or work in confined spaces. Method statements are used for complex or high-risk tasks, including hot works, roof work, or structural drilling. All hazards are identified and assessed for severity and likelihood; control measures are implemented accordingly.

5. Safe Working Practices

  • All tools and equipment are regularly inspected, tested, and maintained in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Electrical tools are PAT tested as required.
  • Gas appliances are tested using approved methods and calibrated equipment.
  • Manual handling risks are minimised through team lifts or use of lifting equipment.
  • Safe isolation procedures are followed when working on electrics or pressurised systems.

6. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

The company provides and maintains the following as standard:

  • Safety boots with steel toecaps
  • High-visibility vests or jackets
  • Eye protection
  • Nitrile gloves / heat-resistant gloves
  • Dust masks / FFP3 face coverings (as required)

PPE must be worn as instructed and kept in good condition. Replacement PPE is provided as needed.

7. Welfare and First Aid

  • All engineers have access to a basic first aid kit while on site.
  • Serious incidents are reported under RIDDOR where necessary.
  • Access to hygiene facilities (handwashing, toilets) is arranged on longer jobs or new builds.
  • Lone working procedures are followed, and engineers check in regularly.

8. Emergency Procedures

  • All staff are trained in the safe evacuation of premises in the event of gas leaks, fire, or major water ingress.
  • Engineers carry gas detection equipment and are trained in emergency shut-off procedures.
  • Fire extinguishers are provided on vehicles for use in emergencies.

9. Training and Competency

  • All gas engineers are Gas Safe registered and complete annual CPD as required.
  • Additional training includes:
    • Asbestos awareness
    • Working at height
    • Manual handling
    • Use of power tools
    • Confined spaces (where applicable)
  • Toolbox talks are held periodically to reinforce safety messages and address job-specific hazards.

10. Monitoring and Review

  • We regularly audit health and safety performance on site and during service calls.
  • Near misses and incidents are recorded and investigated to prevent recurrence.
  • This policy is reviewed annually or when there are major changes to legislation, company structure, or nature of work.

11. Communication

  • This policy is issued to all employees and available in vehicles, on site, and on our website.
  • We maintain open communication with staff regarding safety improvements and concerns.
  • Clients may request a copy of this policy when engaging our services.
