Boiler servicing: questions answered
What a service is, how often, what it costs and boiler cover.
Boiler servicing
How often should a boiler be serviced?
Once every 12 months is the standard. Most manufacturers ask for an annual service by a Gas Safe engineer to keep the warranty valid, and HSE advises annual servicing where there are no manufacturer instructions. Booking around the same date each year keeps the warranty record clean and catches faults before winter.
Is it really worth paying for a boiler service every year?
For most homes, yes. An annual service checks the boiler is burning safely, measures the flue gases, clears the condensate trap and spots worn parts early. Skipping it can void a manufacturer warranty and lets problems build up unseen. For an older, out of warranty boiler, it is still the main safety check the appliance gets.
How much does a boiler service cost in Telford?
CombiCert's boiler service in Telford and Shropshire is from £90 + VAT, which is £108 inc VAT. Prices you see quoted online vary because some include a gas safety record, a filter clean or a full strip down and others do not. Always ask what readings and checks are included before you book.
What should a proper boiler service include?
A proper service covers a visual check of the boiler, flue and pipework, a combustion analyser reading of the flue gases, gas pressure and gas rate checks, cleaning or checking parts the manufacturer specifies, the condensate trap, safety devices and controls. You should get a written record with the readings, not just a sticker.
What is the difference between a standard service and a full strip down service?
A standard service follows the manufacturer's checklist and readings. A strip down goes further, removing and cleaning parts such as the burner, fan or heat exchanger. Many engineers only strip down when the combustion readings or condition show it is needed, rather than every year. Ask your engineer to explain the readings behind any recommendation.
Can you service an LPG boiler?
Yes. LPG boilers should be serviced every 12 months, like mains gas boilers, by a Gas Safe engineer qualified for LPG work. LPG is heavier than air and pools at low level if it leaks, so checks on the appliance, supply and ventilation matter. CombiCert services LPG boilers in Telford and across Shropshire.
Is boiler cover worth it, or should I just pay for a service and repairs?
It depends on your boiler and your budget. Cover plans spread costs and often include a yearly service, but check the excess, age limits and excluded parts. Many people with a newer, reliable boiler pay for an annual service and keep money aside for repairs. CombiCert does not sell cover plans.
Should I get the boiler and gas checked when buying a house?
It is a sensible step. There is no legal requirement for a homeowner gas safety certificate when buying, but a gas safety check or service tells you whether the boiler and appliances are safe and how they have been looked after. CombiCert's homeowner and home mover gas safety check is from £90 + VAT.
How do I check an engineer is really Gas Safe registered?
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and read the back, which lists the types of gas work they are qualified for, such as domestic boilers or catering. You can also search the business or engineer on the Gas Safe Register website. CombiCert Ltd's Gas Safe registration number is 621146.
What causes sludge in central heating systems?
Sludge is mostly rust and debris from inside radiators and pipes, made worse when the water lacks corrosion inhibitor or air keeps getting in. It causes cold spots, noisy boilers and blockages. A system clean, a magnetic filter and correct inhibitor levels help keep it under control.
What is a flue gas analyser and why is it used on a service?
It is an instrument that reads the gases leaving the flue, including carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. It shows whether the boiler is burning safely and within the manufacturer's limits. Readings are recorded on the service sheet, so ask your engineer for a copy.
Will skipping a service void my boiler warranty?
Often, yes. Most manufacturers require an annual service by a Gas Safe engineer, recorded in the benchmark logbook or online, to keep the warranty valid. Check your warranty documents for the exact terms and keep every service record. CombiCert can service your boiler and complete the record; call 07393 220694.
How long does a boiler service take?
A typical domestic service takes around 45 minutes to an hour, longer if the boiler needs a deeper clean or parts. Make sure the engineer can reach the boiler, flue and gas meter, and let them know about any faults or noises beforehand.
What questions will an engineer ask before a service?
Expect to be asked which gas appliances you have, where they and the meter are, whether you have smelt gas recently and whether you have had any heating or hot water problems. These answers help the engineer focus the checks.
Is the condensate trap cleaned during a service?
On condensing boilers the trap collects debris that can block it and lock the boiler out, so it is normally checked and cleaned as part of the manufacturer's service routine. Some models also have a siphon that needs attention. This is inside the boiler, so leave it to the engineer.
What is corrosion inhibitor and does my system need it?
Inhibitor is a chemical added to heating water to slow rusting and scale inside radiators, pipes and the boiler. Manufacturers usually require it. Levels drop if water is drained or topped up a lot, so an engineer can test and dose it during a service.
Should my boiler be serviced before winter?
Many people book in late summer or early autumn so problems are found before cold weather. Any time of year works as long as it is every 12 months. If the heating has not run for months, try it early to spot problems in time.
What is a Benchmark checklist for my boiler?
The Benchmark checklist, at the back of the installation manual or held digitally, records commissioning details and every service. Manufacturers use it to check warranty conditions. Keep it with the boiler and ask each engineer to complete the service section after their visit.
