A cold spot for boilers

Newport has a claim nobody wants. England’s lowest recorded temperature, minus 26.1°C, was measured at Harper Adams, just outside the town, in January 1982. It rarely gets anywhere near that, but hard frosts are a fact of life here.

That matters for condensing boilers. The white plastic condensate pipe that runs outside can freeze, and when it does the boiler shuts down and shows a fault. A few simple things help:

  • Leave the boiler switched on with the gas on in winter, even if you are away, so its built-in frost protection can work.
  • If the condensate pipe is at ground level and easy to reach, you can thaw it with warm water. Never boiling water, and never climb a ladder to do it.
  • If it freezes every winter, mention it at your next service so we can look at the pipe run.

Boiler repairs in Newport

We repair Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Vaillant, Ideal, Viessmann, Potterton, Glow-worm, Alpha and Main boilers, on natural gas and LPG. We find the cause first and tell you the price before we do the work. Before calling, try our quick checks when your boiler is not working. See boiler repairs.

Boiler servicing

An annual service checks the boiler is burning safely and is usually a condition of the manufacturer’s guarantee. It is also a good time to look at the condensate pipe before winter. See boiler servicing.

New boilers

Newport has everything from older houses around the High Street to newer estates on the edge of town. We look at the house, the hot water demand and the existing pipework before recommending a combi, system or regular boiler. See new boiler installation and the boiler installation cost guide.

Landlord gas safety certificates for Newport lets

With Harper Adams University at Edgmond and several schools in the town, Newport has its share of rented houses, flats and shared homes. Any landlord who lets a property with gas appliances needs a gas safety check every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and tenants must get a copy. New tenants must be given a copy before they move in, so with academic-year lets it helps to get the check done over the summer. See landlord gas safety certificates.

Commercial gas in Newport

Newport has independent shops, cafés and pubs in the centre and small industrial estates on the edges. We service and repair commercial boilers, carry out gas safety checks and tightness testing, and work on warm-air heaters in workshops and units. See light commercial gas services and commercial gas and plant rooms. For pub, café and takeaway kitchens, see commercial kitchen gas safety.

Gas pipe checks and emergency plumbing

Newport is inside the area for our gas pipe check. If you have been told your gas pipe needs replacing, we carry out our own tests and give you written findings for £80 + VAT.

We also cover Newport for emergency plumbing. The emergency call-out is £150 + VAT, including the first hour on site.

Villages near Newport

We also cover Church Aston, Chetwynd Aston, Longford, Edgmond and Lilleshall. Some outlying farms and villages are not on mains gas. We work on LPG boilers as well as natural gas. If you are not sure what your boiler runs on, send us a photo of the boiler and its data badge.

Newport gas engineer FAQs

Do you cover Newport and the villages around it?

Yes. Newport, Church Aston, Chetwynd Aston, Longford, Edgmond and Lilleshall are all in our area. Call 07393 220 694.

Is there a travel charge for Newport?

No. Newport is local to us, so there is no travel charge.

Do you work on LPG boilers?

Yes. We work on LPG as well as natural gas, which helps if you are in a village off the mains gas network.

My boiler stops every time there is a hard frost. Why?

Usually a frozen condensate pipe. Thaw it with warm water if it is at ground level and safe to reach, then reset once. If it keeps happening, the pipe run needs looking at.

I let a student house near Harper Adams. What do I need?

A gas safety check every 12 months on every gas appliance and flue you provide, with a copy to the tenants. Keep the records for at least two years.
