Why are you even in this situation?
Because the gas leak test (a “tightness test”) is getting much stricter — and a lot of engineers are answering with one word: replace.
How it used to work
The engineer puts a gauge on your system and watches for a pressure drop. Under the older rules, with your boiler and cooker still connected, many homes could show a drop of around 4mb and still be passed if there was no smell of gas. Plenty of engineers would tick it as fine and leave — without checking whether that drop was actually on the pipe.
At CombiCert we never really liked that. If we saw a drop over 0.5mb with no smell of gas, we went looking for the cause. Very rarely was the answer a whole new gas pipe. More often it was a joint, a short section, a proper repair — then test again until we were happy.
What is changing now
From 1 October 2026 engineers have to follow a new national testing standard (IGEM/UP/1B Edition 4).
The simple version:
You were never allowed a leak on the pipe itself. That has not changed.
What has changed: under the old rules, if the drop looked “small enough” with appliances still on, many engineers did not have to prove it was not the pipe. They could treat it as an appliance issue and walk away.
Under the new rules, if the gauge moves at all with appliances on, the engineer must turn the appliances off the test and check the pipe and meter on their own. If the pipe still drops, it fails. It has to be repaired or made safe. You cannot just assume it is the boiler or cooker anymore.
That sounds like a small paperwork change. For households it can mean hundreds, or sometimes thousands of pounds, if someone jumps straight to “replace the lot” instead of finding the real fault — or if a pipe that used to scrape a pass now has to stand up on its own.
Why the crackdown? The UK gas network is being prepared for a hydrogen mix in natural gas (up to around 20% in the new standard). Hydrogen is more explosive across a wider range than normal gas, so tiny pipe leaks matter more. The industry is getting much stricter about pipework that is not truly tight.
Where that leaves you
Sometimes new pipe is the right call — especially if the leak is under a floor or in a wall. Sometimes it can be repaired, re-tested, and left safe. Some “new pipe throughout” quotes are given without enough looking.
Our £80 + VAT check is for that gap. We test properly from the ECV through the meter into your pipes. Repair if we can. Quote new pipe if you need it. And if the fault is on Cadent’s network side, that repair is free — a lot of engineers never test that far.

Not always. Concealed leaking pipe, or an undersized supply, often needs a new run. Accessible faults can often be repaired. The check establishes which.
