Boiler broken down? Safe checks before you call
- Power. Check the boiler display is lit and the fused spur switch next to it is on.
- Gas. Make sure the gas is on at the meter, any prepayment meter has credit and another gas appliance, such as the hob, works.
- Pressure. Most sealed combi and system boilers need about 1 to 1.5 bar on the gauge when the heating is cold. Below that, the boiler may lock out.
- Controls. Check the thermostat is turned up, the timer is calling for heat and any smart control has batteries and a connection.
- Frozen condensate pipe. In freezing weather, pour warm (not boiling) water along the plastic pipe where it runs outside.
- Reset once. Note the fault code, then reset the boiler once. If it locks out again, leave it off and call us. Our boiler fault code search explains most codes.
When to stop and leave it to an engineer
- You can smell gas, or a carbon monoxide alarm has gone off: call 0800 111 999 first.
- Water is leaking from the boiler or pipework: turn off the water at the stopcock and see our emergency plumber in Telford page.
- The boiler keeps locking out after one reset, or shows scorch marks, soot or a yellow flame.
- The boiler makes loud banging or whistling noises.
Never take the boiler case off yourself. By law, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on gas appliances.

Emergency boiler repair FAQs
Do you offer emergency boiler repair in Telford?
Yes. If your boiler has stopped working, call or WhatsApp CombiCert on 07393 220694, Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 19:45. We ask for the make, model and any fault code, talk you through safe checks, then book a visit by a Gas Safe registered engineer (621146).
What are your opening hours for boiler breakdowns?
We are open Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 19:45. Outside those hours you can send a WhatsApp message to 07393 220694 with your address, boiler make and fault code, and we will reply when we are next open. If you smell gas, call 0800 111 999 at any time.
How much does an emergency boiler repair cost?
Boiler repairs start from £90 + VAT. That covers the visit and diagnosis on a standard domestic boiler. If a part is needed, we tell you what has failed and what the repair will cost before any work starts, so you can decide. Commercial boiler repairs are priced on request.
What should I check before calling about a broken boiler?
Check the boiler has power, the gas is on at the meter and another gas appliance works. Look at the pressure gauge: most sealed boilers need about 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Check the thermostat and timer, and in freezing weather the outside condensate pipe. Then note any fault code.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Call the National Gas Emergency Service free on 0800 111 999 straight away. Open doors and windows, turn off the gas at the meter if you can reach it safely, and do not use flames, light switches or plugs. If anyone feels unwell, get outside and seek medical help.
Should I keep resetting my boiler?
No. Reset the boiler once after checking the power, gas and pressure. If it locks out again, leave it off and call us. Repeated resets can hide a fault rather than fix it, and some lockouts are safety shutdowns that need a Gas Safe registered engineer to find the cause.
Which areas do you cover for boiler breakdowns?
We are based in Telford and cover Wellington, Madeley, Dawley, Oakengates, Donnington, Priorslee, Ironbridge and the rest of Telford, plus Newport, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth and the wider Shropshire area. Call or WhatsApp 07393 220694 with your postcode and we will confirm when we can book you in.
Which boiler makes can you repair?
We repair all the common boiler makes, including Baxi, Worcester Bosch, Ideal, Viessmann, Vaillant, Potterton, Glow-worm and Main, on natural gas and LPG. We install Baxi, Worcester Bosch, Ideal and Viessmann, so if a repair is not worth doing we can quote a replacement, subject to a site inspection.
