Gas work in the Ironbridge Gorge is not like gas work on a Telford estate. The Gorge has been a World Heritage Site since 1986, many of its homes are old, and the River Severn runs through it. CombiCert is Gas Safe registered (621146) and based in Telford. We repair, service and replace boilers and carry out landlord gas safety checks in Ironbridge and Coalbrookdale.

Before any boiler work starts
Three questions come up in the Gorge that rarely come up elsewhere in Telford:
- Is the house listed or in a conservation area? Parts of the Gorge are in a conservation area and some homes are listed buildings. That can affect external work, including where a new flue comes out. If it applies to you, check with the council’s planning team before the job is booked.
- Where can the flue go? We look for a route to the back or a side wall before we quote.
- How do we get to the boiler? Steep lanes, narrow access and limited parking are common here. Tell us about access when you call and send a photo of the boiler and where it sits, so we can plan the job.
The river, and what to do after a flood
Ironbridge has a recurring problem with flooding from the Severn, and a portable barrier has been put up along the Wharfage at times of flood since 2004.
If floodwater has reached a boiler, do not switch it back on. Leave it off until a Gas Safe registered engineer has inspected it, and have the electrics checked as well. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Homes of the Gorge
Above the river there are 17th and 18th century workers’ cottages, Georgian houses built by ironmasters and early Victorian villas. In Coalbrookdale, workers’ cottages went up from the 1740s, some in terraces such as Tea Kettle Row, and from the 1770s many buildings had cast-iron window frames and chimney pots.
Not everything is old. There are 1930s council houses at Wrekin View and 1950s houses at Beech Road, Roberts Road and School Road, so we always look at what you actually have. (These details are from the Victoria County History, 1985, and many houses have been altered since.) If your home runs on LPG rather than mains gas, we work on LPG boilers as well as natural gas. For the wider picture, see new boiler installation and the boiler installation cost guide.
Repairs, servicing and landlords
When a boiler fails we find the cause and explain the options and cost before we start. Try our quick checks when your boiler is not working first, then see boiler repairs. A yearly boiler service is also a good time to look at the flue.
The legal gas safety check applies to rented homes in the Gorge, and HSE guidance on landlord gas safety records also covers holiday accommodation. Our CP12 is £90 including VAT; the landlord gas safety certificates page has more.
Pubs, cafés and shops
Ironbridge has pubs, cafés and independent shops. We service and repair commercial boilers and carry out gas safety checks and tightness tests for premises like these. Our light commercial gas services page has the detail. Commercial catering is within our Gas Safe registration, and we fit and test gas interlocks: see commercial kitchen gas safety for kitchens.
Ironbridge Gorge gas engineer FAQs
Can you fit a new boiler in a listed building or a conservation area?
Often the outside of the building is the issue, not the boiler. We work out the least visible flue route, and you should check with the council’s planning team whether permission is needed before work starts.
What should I do with my boiler after a flood?
Leave it off. Do not switch it back on until a Gas Safe registered engineer has inspected it, and have the electrics checked as well. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Our lane is steep and there is no parking. Is that a problem?
Tell us about access when you call and send a photo of the boiler and where it sits. That lets us plan the job and bring the right equipment.
Do you cover Ironbridge and Coalbrookdale?
Yes. If you are elsewhere in the Gorge or not sure your address is covered, call us and we will confirm.
