Baxi is one of the boiler manufacturers CombiCert works with when helping homeowners choose a replacement heating system. The best boiler is determined by the property and hot-water requirements rather than the brand name alone.
We also repair and service Baxi boilers, plus Potterton and Main, which are made by the same group. Below are the common Baxi fault codes, the checks you can do yourself and how to keep the warranty valid.
Baxi boiler options
Baxi manufactures combi, system and heat-only boilers for a range of property types. When comparing models, useful considerations include the required output, hot-water demand, installation space, controls, warranty terms and access to future servicing and parts.
In practice, a combi suits homes where one shower runs at a time. Two bathrooms in use together usually needs a system or heat-only boiler with a cylinder. Bigger output is not automatically better.
Choosing a boiler for your home
CombiCert assesses the existing system and discusses how the household uses heating and hot water before recommending suitable options. We provide new boiler installation in Telford and explain the proposed work in a clear quotation. We install Baxi boilers.
When the job is done, we fill in the Benchmark checklist and register the warranty. Baxi says this must be done within 30 days of installation. For typical prices, see our boiler installation cost guide.
We work on LPG as well as natural gas. If your home is off the mains gas network, ask us whether an LPG version of the boiler you are looking at is available.
Baxi fault codes and what they mean
Baxi uses two sets of codes, depending on the model. The meanings below are from Baxi’s own code list.
Many Baxi boilers in homes today (including the 600, 800, Duo-tec, Platinum, EcoBlue and Assure, plus the Potterton Assure and Main Eco Compact):
| Code | What Baxi says it means | In plain terms |
|---|---|---|
| E133 | Gas supply fault | The boiler tried to light and did not detect a flame. Check your gas supply first |
| E118 | Water pressure low (below 0.5 bar) | The system needs topping up, and may have a leak if it keeps happening |
| E110 | Overheat or safety thermostat tripped | Often a stuck pump or air in the system |
| E160 | Fan fault | Needs an engineer |
The newer Combi 2 and System 2 range (such as the Baxi 200, 400, 600 and 800 Combi 2):
| Code | What Baxi says it means |
|---|---|
| E.04.10 | Burner failed to ignite after 4 attempts |
| A.02.06 | Low system pressure in heating circuit |
| H.02.07 | Low pressure in heating circuit (permanent) |
If your code is not here, your user manual will list it. Got a Worcester Bosch boiler instead? See our Worcester Bosch boiler guide.
What you can safely check yourself
- Gas. Try the hob. On a prepayment meter, check the credit and emergency credit. Some meters need a button pressing after a top-up to restore the supply.
- Power. Check the display, the fused switch by the boiler and the fuse box.
- Timer and thermostat. Check the timer is on and the thermostat is set above room temperature.
- Pressure. Most sealed systems sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, but go by your manual. If your manual shows how to top up with the filling loop, you can do that, then close the valves fully. If it drops again within days, there is a leak or a faulty part.
- Condensate pipe. In freezing weather the plastic pipe outside can freeze and stop the boiler. If it is at ground level and easy to reach, thaw it with warm water, never boiling, and never at height.
- Reset. Press reset once. If the fault comes straight back, leave it and call an engineer.
What needs a Gas Safe engineer
Anything inside the case: electrodes, gas valve, fan, pump, diverter valve, circuit board, heat exchanger and flue. By law, gas work must be done by someone Gas Safe registered. If you smell gas, turn it off at the meter if you can, open windows and call 0800 111 999.
If an existing Baxi boiler has developed a fault, our boiler repair in Telford can help diagnose the problem.
Servicing and warranty
Once installed, arrange regular boiler servicing in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements. Baxi’s warranty conditions are: register within 30 days, complete the Benchmark checklist and keep it safe, and have the boiler serviced every year in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
A new Baxi boiler can come with an extended manufacturer warranty. The length depends on the model and on the warranty being registered, so check your paperwork for your exact terms. If the boiler develops a fault while still in warranty, contact Baxi before booking anyone else.
Repair or replace?
A fault does not automatically mean a new boiler. If it is under about ten years old, parts are available and it is a single fault, repairing usually makes sense. Think about replacement when breakdowns keep happening, parts are hard to get, the repair would cost a large share of a new boiler, or the boiler no longer keeps up with the house. We will give you our honest view.
Baxi boiler questions
What does E133 mean on a Baxi boiler?
Baxi lists it as a gas supply fault. The boiler tried to light and did not see a flame. Check the gas is on and any prepayment meter has credit, check the condensate pipe in frosty weather, then reset once. If it returns, call an engineer.
My Baxi shows E118. What should I do?
The pressure has dropped below 0.5 bar. Top it up using the filling loop as your manual shows, then reset. If it keeps dropping, book a repair.
Do you install Baxi boilers?
Yes. A new Baxi boiler can come with an extended manufacturer warranty. The length depends on the model and on the warranty being registered.
Do you work on Potterton and Main boilers too?
Yes. Some of their models use the same fault codes as Baxi.
How often does a Baxi boiler need servicing?
Every year. Baxi makes an annual service one of its warranty conditions.
