Four ages of housing in one town
Dawley was a mining and ironworking town long before Telford existed. It is in the Domesday Book, and in 1963 it was designated as “Dawley New Town”, renamed Telford in 1968. The housing shows every stage of that history:
- Cottages and terraces from the 1700s and 1800s. Miners and ironworkers built small brick-and-tile cottages along the roads. Most of the buildings facing the High Street were rebuilt in the early and mid 1800s, and a few larger detached houses went up in King Street.
- Council houses of the 1930s. About 370 were built between 1927 and 1939 at five sites, mostly brick pairs and blocks of four, around Finger Road, Portley Road, Alma Avenue and Ardern Avenue.
- Post-war estates. Manor Farm (roughly 350 houses and flats, built 1950 to 1955) and Langley Farm (over 350 houses, 1957 to 1966).
- Telford estates of the late 1970s. Malinslee (1,127 homes), Aqueduct (247) and north-west Dawley (239), all built by Telford Development Corporation.
Those figures come from the Victoria County History (1985), so they describe how the area was built, not what is there today. Many houses have been altered since.
